5 Mistakes to Avoid When Designing Your Homepage

Your homepage is the first impression visitors get from your website. If it doesn’t clearly explain who you are, what you offer, or how users can take action, they will leave within seconds. Many businesses unknowingly make mistakes that hurt conversions, user experience, and overall credibility. In this guide, we highlight the five most common homepage mistakes and how to avoid them.

1. Confusing or Overloaded Hero Section

The hero section is the top area of your homepage—the first thing users see. One of the biggest mistakes is adding too much text, too many images, or unclear messaging. Visitors should immediately understand what your business does in less than 5 seconds.

  • Use a short, powerful headline.
  • Add a clear subtitle explaining your services.
  • Include one strong call-to-action (CTA) button.

2. No Clear Call-to-Action (CTA)

A homepage without a clear CTA causes users to feel lost. Whether your goal is booking a call, filling out a form, or viewing services, the CTA must be easy to find.

  • Use buttons like “Get Started”, “Contact Us”, or “View Services”.
  • Place CTAs in multiple sections of the homepage.
  • Use contrasting colors so the button stands out.

3. Too Much Text and No Visual Hierarchy

Large blocks of text overwhelm visitors. Your homepage must be scannable. Modern users read quickly—they don’t read paragraphs; they skim.

  • Use short paragraphs.
  • Create sections with clear headings.
  • Add icons, images, or graphics to make information easier to understand.

4. Not Showing Social Proof

Many homepages forget to include social proof—testimonials, reviews, logos, or previous projects. This reduces trust. Visitors want to see evidence that your business is reliable and professional.

  • Add testimonials or client reviews.
  • Showcase projects or portfolio highlights.
  • Add logos of companies you’ve worked with.

5. Poor Mobile Experience
